Warm Showers is a community formed by cycling enthusiasts who offer their homes as accommodation for touring cyclists. It is a non-profit organization, and the main element offered through its network is lodging in private homes, where you receive a warm welcome and services that facilitate your journey. These services include the possibility of using the location’s address for receiving postal mail or getting advice from locals about the area’s routes. All these services are provided free of charge.
The concept of this platform is inspired by the original idea of John Mosley, who in 1976 published an advertisement in a cycling magazine and managed to gather a list of 800 contacts of people willing to host touring cyclists. The list, at that time, was in a paper file. A few years later, in 1993, Warm Showers was born, and gradually, the file became a website with a database that currently counts 180,000 users.
The platform is composed of users who offer their homes and have a profile containing contact information, the services they provide to touring cyclists, and their approximate location. In our case, as travelers, what we do is reach out to profiles along our route that are of interest to us. We contact them a few days in advance, explain our project, and inquire whether they are available to host us.
